High quality music education is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum, which is why the Youth Music Initiative is so important. I feel strongly that high quality music education should inspire all pupils to develop a love of music and can increase self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
It is therefore disappointing that the SNP Government has paused the £9 million funding for the Youth Music Initiative. Despite this and proposing cuts for most portfolio areas in the recent spending review, it’s staggering that the SNP have priced in £20 million to hold a second independence referendum next year, despite this not being a priority for a majority of Scots.
Going forward, the Scottish Conservatives will continue to hold this SNP Government to account to ensure that young people and their music education get the funding they deserve.
