The Scottish Conservatives are grateful for the lecturers and teaching staff that have worked incredibly hard over the past two years as Scotland has gone through the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic and prior.
It is concerning that UCU member staff from 11 Scottish universities voted in favour of another round of strike action in April over pensions and pay and working conditions. The 5 Scottish universities taking strike action over pensions are: University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, and University of St. Andrews. The 6 Scottish universities taking strike action over pay and working conditions are: University of Dundee, Edinburgh Napier University, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, and University of St. Andrews.
This follows on from the strike action taken in February, March, and December last year. The current mandate to take strike action over pensions will last until October 2022.
The Scottish Conservatives do not want to see education further disrupted and urge university bosses to engage with staff and unions with a view to resolving longstanding pay and employment concerns.
Both sides need to get around the table and work together, to avoid Scotland’s students being impacted.
