Local Government Funding

For the last 14 years, I have been concerned by the Scottish Government’s centralising approach to local authorities, which has left them underfunded and with too few powers.  In the period between the 2017 and 2022 Local Elections, the SNP Government has overruled local councils on almost half of all planning decision appeals while local authority budgets continue to be ringfenced for projects set out by Scottish Ministers in Holyrood.

Ever since Nicola Sturgeon came into power, the revenue funding of Scotland’s local authorities has been cut by £700 million in real terms. Last year alone, the budget for local authorities was slashed by £271 million.
