Thank you for contacting me about ethical principles for wildlife management.
I would like to reassure you that, alongside my Scottish Conservative colleagues in the Scottish Parliament, I am committed to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare. I completely agree with you about the importance of doing so.
I am clear that those who abuse and inflict cruelty on animals should be punished with the full force of the law. I was very pleased to support the Animals and Wildlife (Scotland) Act 2020 which ensures those that harm or abuse animals are punished.
My colleague Rachael Hamilton has lodged a motion to raise awareness of the concerning decline of many bird species in Scotland including ground nesting birds such as the endangered Capercaillie.
I also welcome the work of the UK Government in progressing the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill through the House of Commons. Recognising the sentience of animals is fundamental to ensuring their welfare, and it is important that this is done across the UK.
