The Scottish Conservatives want to see housing across the country that is greener, cleaner and more energy efficient. Myself and my Scottish Conservative colleagues are therefore supportive of this bill, in principle.
Encouraging an uplift in energy efficiency standards is of vital importance if we are to reach our net-zero targets, but we also recognise that rocketing house prices mean we need to build more houses at a quicker pace. Imposing mandatory energy efficiency standards may cause house prices to rise and housebuilding to slow.
We believe that there are merits to higher environmental building standards but that this needs to be weighed against current high housing demands. My parliamentary colleagues and I will engage constructively with Alex Rowley’s Bill once the consultation is completed.
