Conversion therapy

The Scottish Conservatives are committed to banning conversion therapy and want to see a UK-wide ban legislated for at Westminster in the first instance. If that is not possible then we will consider legislation at Holyrood.

A 2021 study by Coventry University has shown that up to 15% of LGBT people in the UK have been offered conversion therapy. It is simply not acceptable that so many people have been made to feel that their sexuality or gender is something to be ‘corrected’.

We recognise however that there is an important balance to be struck between ensuring that nobody is subjected to conversion therapy, while also protecting religious freedom of expression and ensuring everyday church activities are not outlawed. We will therefore examine any proposals that are brought forward carefully to ensure this balance is maintained.

We will work constructively with both the UK and Scottish governments to ensure that conversion therapy is banned in Scotland during this parliament.
